Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of a paver patio depends on the size, paver selection, site access and conditions, excavation requirements, design complexity, steps, borders, drainage, and other features. However, the visible pavers are only part of the investment.

At TrueDecks®, we place significant emphasis on proper excavation, aggregate base preparation and compaction, grading and drainage, separation fabric, and perimeter restraint systems. These components are critical to preventing settlement, shifting, erosion, and sinking over time.

Two patios that look similar when first installed can have very different costs, and very different lifespans, depending on how the foundation underneath them was constructed.

Paver patios can be installed year-round, provided site and ground conditions allow the work to be performed properly. Unlike some temperature-sensitive outdoor applications, the aggregate base and pavers themselves do not require warm weather for installation.

Spring is typically one of the busiest times because homeowners begin planning outdoor projects, but it is not necessarily a better time to install pavers. Winter and other slower seasons can be equally suitable for installation when the ground is workable and conditions permit proper excavation, base preparation, compaction, and drainage.

TrueDecks® evaluates actual site conditions rather than relying on a particular season to determine when a paver patio can be properly installed.

It depends on the type of paver system. Standard concrete pavers are not designed for significant amounts of water to drain directly through the surface. Instead, a properly installed patio is graded with a typical 2% slope away from the building, so surface water drains in the intended direction.

For projects where water infiltration is required, we use permeable paver systems specifically designed with larger openings that allow rainwater to pass through the joints into a specially prepared aggregate base and ultimately into the ground.

At TrueDecks®, we primarily install Nicolock pavers and design the grading, base, drainage, and paver system together based on the site conditions and water-management requirements.

The cost of repairing pavers depends primarily on why they failed and how much of the underlying base needs to be corrected. A few loose or settled pavers may require localized work, while widespread sinking, shifting, or separation can indicate problems with base preparation, compaction, drainage, erosion, or perimeter restraint.

At TrueDecks®, we focus on identifying and correcting the cause of the failure, not simply lifting and resetting the visible pavers. The extent of that corrective work, accessibility, replacement materials, and size of the affected area ultimately determine the repair cost.

A properly installed paver patio is relatively low maintenance, but it is not maintenance-free. Routine care typically includes cleaning the surface, controlling weeds and organic growth, replenishing polymeric joint sand when needed, and correcting minor settlement or movement before it becomes a larger problem.

TrueDecks® generally recommends having paver patios evaluated and maintained approximately every 2 to 3 years, depending on exposure and condition. Maintaining the joints and addressing drainage, erosion, or settlement early helps keep the pavers stable and can significantly extend the appearance and performance of the patio.
