New Fence vs. Fence Repair

Not every fence project requires a full replacement. If you are building a new fence, changing your property layout, or upgrading to a different fencing material, TrueDecks provides professional fence installation and construction services.

For existing fences with damage, leaning posts, broken sections, or storm-related issues, our fence repair service may be the better solution. If your fence is structurally sound but needs routine washing or maintenance, explore our fence cleaning services to help restore its appearance.

Choose the right service based on your project needs:

  • New fence installation: Building a new fence, replacing an outdated fence, or changing your fence design.
  • Fence repair: Fixing damaged sections, posts, or other existing fence issues.
  • Fence cleaning: Washing, maintaining, or improving the appearance of an existing fence.

Frequently Asked Questions

When choosing a reputable fence contractor in Montgomery County, look beyond price and consider licensing, insurance, installation methods, materials, warranties, local reputation, and whether the company will be available to service the fence after installation.

TrueDecks® has more than 25 years of exterior construction and maintenance experience and is licensed in Maryland under MHIC #128722. We install wood, vinyl, composite, and aluminum fencing, and our experience maintaining older outdoor structures gives us firsthand knowledge of which materials and installation methods tend to perform better over time.

For example, where appropriate, we prefer screws instead of nails for wood fence construction to help reduce loose boards over time and make future repairs and maintenance easier.

TrueDecks® is also a full-service outdoor living company. We can build your fence and continue maintaining and repairing it in the future, keeping the work under one company rather than relying on multiple contractors who may affect workmanship warranty coverage. We can also combine fencing with decks, patios, and other outdoor improvements into a coordinated project for homeowners looking for a more complete, worry-free outdoor living solution.

A fence can be installed year-round in Maryland and Virginia, provided site and ground conditions allow the work to be performed properly. There is no particular season that inherently produces a better fence installation.

Spring and summer tend to be the busiest seasons simply because more homeowners are planning outdoor projects, not because they are technically better times to build. Fall and winter can be equally suitable and may offer greater scheduling availability when weather and ground conditions cooperate.

TrueDecks® installs wood, vinyl, composite, and aluminum fencing throughout the year. Rather than waiting for a particular season, we evaluate the actual site, weather, and ground conditions to determine when installation can be completed properly.

For most residential applications, aluminum and vinyl fences are among the longest-lasting fence options. Both resist many of the problems that eventually affect wood, including rot, insect damage, moisture-related deterioration, cracking, and ongoing staining or sealing requirements. Aluminum also provides excellent dimensional stability and does not rust like traditional steel.

Pressure-treated wood and cedar fences can also provide many years of service when properly constructed and periodically maintained, but they generally do not offer the same longevity or low-maintenance characteristics as quality vinyl or aluminum. Wood naturally expands, contracts, cracks, warps, and weathers over time.

TrueDecks® installs and maintains wood, vinyl, composite, and aluminum fencing, so we help homeowners compare materials based on privacy, appearance, upfront investment, maintenance requirements, and expected long-term performance rather than recommending one material for every property.

Providing a meaningful fence price without evaluating the property can be difficult because many variables affect the total installed cost. Linear footage and material are only the starting point. Fence height and style, gates, property slope, soil conditions, access, demolition and disposal, property lines, utility considerations, permits, HOA requirements, and other site-specific conditions can substantially affect the final price.

Homeowners may also see inexpensive fence panels or materials advertised at big-box stores, but material cost represents only one portion of a professionally installed fence. A complete project also involves planning, accurate measurements, layout, labor, equipment, transportation, hardware, installation, cleanup, permitting when required, and project management.

For this reason, publishing a generic price per foot can create unrealistic expectations and may not accurately represent the finished project.

TrueDecks® provides a free on-site evaluation and estimate so we can accurately measure the property, evaluate site conditions, discuss materials and design, identify project requirements, and provide homeowners with a realistic price based on the complete scope of work rather than an incomplete material estimate.

Fence responsibility generally depends on who owns the fence, where it is located in relation to the property line, and any applicable HOA, community, easement, or property requirements. It should not be assumed that two neighbors automatically share ownership or must split the cost.

For single-family homes, it is common for each homeowner to be responsible for their own fence. In some situations, neighboring properties may even have two separate fences alongside each other, with each fence located inside its respective property. When installing a new fence and the boundary is uncertain, TrueDecks® generally recommends obtaining a property boundary survey and having the property lines clearly marked before installation to help prevent future disputes.

Townhouse communities can be different. Depending on the community documents and property configuration, responsibility for side fences may be divided between adjoining owners, while the rear fence may belong to the individual homeowner. HOA rules and recorded property documents should always be reviewed because arrangements vary by community.

Neighbors may voluntarily agree to share the cost of a fence, but determining how that expense is divided is an agreement between the property owners, not the fence contractor.

For replacement of an existing fence in the same location, the process is generally more straightforward, and permits are not required for many routine fence replacements, although local requirements should always be confirmed before work begins.

Yes. Montgomery County requires a fence permit for the installation of a new fence. However, replacing an existing fence may not require a new permit when the original fence was properly permitted and the replacement is the same type of fence, in the same location, and at the same height. If the existing fence was not originally permitted, a permit is required for the replacement.

Other requirements may also apply depending on the property, including HOA approval, easements, right-of-way conditions, property boundaries, and other site-specific restrictions.

TrueDecks® evaluates these requirements during the planning process and, when a permit is required for our project, handles the permitting process for the homeowner. For new fence installations where property lines are uncertain, we also recommend having the property boundaries professionally surveyed by a third-party surveyor and clearly marked before installation.
