Get Your Windows Weatherproofed
Did you know or realize that the windows of your home can be one of the largest sources of energy loss? Making sure your home and windows are weatherproofed can assist in keeping your house more comfortable and save you a lot of money on your energy bills. While most modern windows that are installed are becoming more and more efficient, it is still important to check to make sure your windows are keeping the cold out in the winter, and the heat out in the summer.

You’ll need a few tools and supplies to weatherproof your windows, but it is worth the investment of your time and effort. The process for each window will only take you a few short minutes and will provide financial returns all year long.
STEP 1 : Prepare Your Windows
Before you actually get started on the weatherproofing process, we recommend cleaning your windows – inside and out. Inspect the frames and replace or fix any frames that may be broken or chipped. Also, if there are any cracks in the glass, consider replacing the entire pane.
STEP 2 : Apply Weatherproofing Materials
For easier installation, buy weatherstripping that is self-adhesive. When you apply the weatherstripping around the inside part of the frame, use a putty knife to create a tight seal. Remember, with the weatherstripping in place, you won’t be able to open your windows during those cold winter months. You also should apply paintable caulk around both the interior and exterior window trim to make sure no air either enters or escapes.
STEP 3 : Protect Your Windows
In some instances, you may want to consider purchasing special weatherproofing window plastic for your window. This can act like another pane of glass to keep the heat in during the winter. Apply the plastic to your window, then use a hair dryer to make sure the plastic it taut.
This whole process should be completed each fall as winter approaches and the temperatures start to drop. We don’t recommend reusing the weatherstripping or weatherproofing window plastic. The savings and comfort are worth it.
